On today's episode of The Art of Paid Traffic, I've got a really cool case study... I’m talking with Amanda Greville from Rock Paper Gifts, a wedding invitation and paper goods company.

Amanda’s been running Facebook ads for her business for about a year now, doing what most beginners do -- boosting a post here and there.

She decided that it was important to keep learning Facebook ads so that she could keep bringing in new business, so about 6 months ago, she started taking things seriously and began using Power Editor to create her ads.

And that’s when the real fun began!

She started seeing some good results and tested different ad formats until she knocked it out of the park with one ad format in particular.

And when I say knocked it out of the park I mean she got a 5000% ROI!

On today's episode we’re talking all about Facebook pixels, specifically the new Facebook pixel and custom conversions.

According to Facebook, the "new" Facebook pixel is what the advertising team is basing all future product development on.

I think this is a good thing as it'll provide some stability going forward (even though, as you'll hear in the episode, there will be lots of iterations and updates).

The Facebook pixel now combines the retargeting pixel AND the conversion tracking.

However, the conversion tracking pixels that we've been using will still work the same way until mid-2016, which means if you currently have the website custom audience pixel on your site, you do not need to change the code.

It's recommended to just get it done, but not necessary right now...

I've got a really cool case study for you today on The Art of Paid Traffic.

Scott Dawson, who recently started creating apps in the hunting decoy space, joins me to talk about the success he's having using Facebook ads to increase iOS and Android downloads of his app.

He’s now making over $2K per month selling his two apps, which may not sound like a ton, but he’s grown that revenue quickly and his business has taken off so well that he just left his full-time job to focus on his decoy business full time.

He’s getting clicks for as little as 5 - 15 cents and he’s also set up a simple funnel to build his email list where his cost per lead is... ready for this? Around 12 cents.  Ha!  Awesome...

  • Primary objective: Get 500 new email subscribers for less than $1 each.
  • Spend $500 on ads in 14 days.
  • Make sure all new subscribers were interested in the topic of list building (his core topic).
  • Get 50% of them to install his List Goal browser extension.

Bryan loves doing experiments in his business. In fact, over an 18-month period, he's performed over 100 different marketing experiments.

Today's episode of The Art of Paid Traffic is a Facebook ads Q&A!

I've received a ton of Facebook ads questions lately so rather than do one super long episode today I'm answering some questions here on today's episode and then I'll cover the other questions on the next Q&A episode.

Here are the questions we cover today:

  • How do you track conversions when using Facebook video ads?
  • I've heard Facebook is now building retargeting audiences based on people who watch our video ads. Is that true? If so, how does this work and how can I turnaround and target these audiences?
  • When creating Facebook ads, I primarily target pages. I've targeted based on professional title a few times and not gotten the best results. What is really the best way to target? Only use ONE targeting option such as Interests, or a combination?
  • Also, I've heard from some FB gurus that you should only target one country at a time for best results. I typically don't do that but have done it more recently.
  • I know it's not typically a good idea to send people directly to a sales page on FB - especially with a cold audience. I tried that a couple of times with no success. However, I recently heard it can possibly work with low cost items.  What are your thoughts on this? What about sending straight to a sales page if you're retargeting website visitors or another custom audience you've used before? Appreciate what you do Rick!
  • If we want to run Facebook ads for one of our businesses but don't have a Facebook page for that business, do we have to build that page up before advertising?
  • After I launch an ad, how do I figure out where to adjust to improve performance? I've been in marketing for 20+ years so I can think of a dozen reasons why an ad isn't working, but changing things up to test each of those hypotheses in a funnel seems arduous.  I'm wondering whether there are more telling ways to figure out whether it's the lead magnet, the Facebook ad or the landing page that is causing poor performance.
  • What's the latest on using LeadPages URLs, the LeadPages WordPress plug-in Custom URL and Privacy Policy links on your landing pages?
