It takes a lot to get me nervous, but I’d by lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about publishing this episode. Today my friend Tiffany Lee Bymaster is flipping the script and turning the tables by interviewing me, and we go really deep with a lot of stuff in this one.

You may remember that Amy Porterfield was on the podcast to interview me and give listeners some background on my life back in Episode 200. If you’re a regular listener you know that my life has changed so much since that episode was recorded (including the fact that I’m now a Dad!), which is why I wanted to air this recent conversation with Tiffany.

It was several months ago when I reached out to Tiffany and asked her how I could be improving my social media, and she said she wanted to interview me for this show, and now we’re doing it!

In this episode you’ll hear me talk about fatherhood, my business evolution, the big realizations I’ve made about business and success since becoming an entrepreneur in 2012, and Tiffany even asks me a series of questions that my students wanted answered too.

She also asks me a “lightning round” of questions where I share my favorite food, business book, why I’m a “movie snob” when I go to the movies, some weird facts about me, and a whole lot more.

We end the episode on a serious note where I talk about the legacy I want to leave my daughter, and I share the message I’ll want her to hear when she grows up. Although we covered so much in this episode, there was still a lot that Tiffany and I didn’t touch, and she did such a great job interviewing me that I’m definitely going to have her back on the show to do this again.

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them by the end of Q3, Sept 30th, 2019. If you’ve gotten value from this podcast, I’d really appreciate you subscribing and leaving an honest rating and review. Take a screenshot, share it on your Instagram Stories and tag me, @rickmulready. When we hit the 750 ratings and reviews, I’ll be raffling off a book bundle of my top 10 business and mindset books for one lucky winner. If you’ve already left a rating and review, just take a screenshot and tag me on Instagram, and you’ll be eligible to win as well!

Want to win a 30-minute strategy session with me? I’ll be drawing one winner at random each month, and all you have to do is give me your feedback on this podcast over at http://rickmulready.com/messenger, telling me what you’d like to hear more of - including topics you’d like to see covered, guests, style and frequency of the show!

On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

  • How Tiffany and I met and got to know each other, plus why she says I intimidated her at first!
  • How I really feel about showing up on social media…
  • What the evolution of my business has looked like, including the initial struggles I faced and what turned it around for me
  • How Facebook ads and networking with the right people (for the right reasons) built my business more than anything else
  • Why I feel that starting this podcast was like “rocket fuel” for the growth of my business
  • The way I discovered the growing a big team does not equal more success
  • Why I’m a diehard Washington Capitals fan but grew up in New Hampshire, and tons of other things you probably didn’t know about me!

The Practicing Mind by Thomas M. Sterner

Aug 14, 2019

My guest today is a member of my current Accelerator mastermind group, and she has been crushing it in just the short time since we started working together! Hallie Sherman is a speech-language pathologist who works full-time in the public school system in New York, and for the last 8 years she’s also been selling digital resources for busy speech-language pathologists online, and I’m sure that her story will resonate with many of the listeners of this podcast.

Hallie began selling her resources on a website called Teachers Pay Teachers back in 2012, and after realizing that she only had so many hours in a week, she has now shifted her focus to creating her own “mini-courses” to sell on her own website. Her products are reasonably priced, about $30 for one and $75 for a bundle, and Hallie recently had a very successful launch, generating 5-figures in revenue in just 5 days.

In this episode you’ll hear how Hallie has made the transition from “hobby” to a true online business, and what really showed her that her audience wanted more digital offerings from her.

She reveals how she built her email list, which now has over 15,000 subscribers, and the way she launched her first online course to generate those 5-figures in revenue.

From listening you’ll note that Hallie is an action taker who always has an open mind, and she doesn’t overcomplicate the process or try to re-invent the wheel. The way she launched is actually the opposite of what I usually teach my students, in that she created the course first and then sold it, but it worked really well for her since she already had the content ready and knew what she was going to have in her mini-courses.

Hallie has created amazing momentum in her business so far, and I truly believe the sky is the limit for her when it comes to what she can create in her life and business!

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them by the end of Q3, Sept 30th, 2019. On the Show Today You’ll Learn:>

  • How Hallie used freebies and segmented her email list to grow a waitlist of 600 people for her first course (before she first even launched)
  • The way she reached out to her target audience of speech-language pathologists to learn exactly what they wanted from her products
  • What Hallie considers her strengths, and how she used them to overcome “imposter syndrome”
  • Her process of learning how to run paid ads to her lead magnets
  • How she leverages her Instagram following of 15,000 people and positions herself as the “go-to” person in her industry
  • The creation process and the steps Hallie took to then launch her mini-courses
  • What she considers the biggest lessons (and surprises) from this experience
  • What Hallie’s team looks like now and the exercise I gave her that will help her decide what role(s) to hire for next

On today’s show I want to talk to you about 3 Facebook Instagram ad mistakes I’ve been seeing lately that are keeping people from getting the results that they want from their ads. These concepts are going to be basic and fundamental in nature, but I find that it’s usually these types of things that are messing us up (and you’ll hear which of these mistakes I’ve been making lately as well).

This episode was inspired by what I was saw at our first Accelerator Group Mastermind retreat here in San Diego earlier in the year. I saw that there was an opportunity for our members to make some changes to lower their cost per lead, and in one campaign, a member was able to do just that and lower her cost per lead from $40 to $5, in just a day!

How did she do it? She was able to make this significant improvement in cost by implementing what I share on the podcast today, and I feel that you could improve your ad performance as well with a few of these simple tweaks and strategies.

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. At this time we have over 500 5-Star ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, which is great, but I’ve set a goal to get 750 of them by the end of Q3, Sept 30th, 2019. On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

  • How people overcomplicate their ad strategies and what a simpler campaign set up will do for you
  • My recommendations for how you can simplify your campaigns, and the importance of using a planned out strategy versus random test ads
  • One of the best things you can do to set your ads up for success – and the tools I use to do it in my business
  • Recommendations and best practices for running multiple ad sets
  • Where people are getting confused around objectives and when it can help to use other objectives instead of conversions
  • A pre-launch strategy I use to build video engagement audiences – and ultimately, lead to conversions!

Today’s guest is someone that I’ve looked to for mentorship, because he is literally one of my favorite people in the online business space. Casey Graham has started and sold three businesses, and he is now the founder and CEO of a company called Gravy. We started working with Gravy a few years back, and they are the leading experts in helping their clients recover failed payments for subscription-based businesses.

Since starting Gravy, Casey and his team have learned a lot of lessons about business and customer psychology that he really opens up about here on this episode. Gravy is now viewed as the “Ritz Carlton of payment recovery”, and Casey does a great job explaining how they differ from collection agencies when I put him on the spot near the start of the interview by asking him that question.

We cover a lot of different topics here, including one I’m really interested in right now, which is how we can learn to “turn the switch” off at the end of the day as busy entrepreneurs (and make the most of the time we all have with our families).

In this episode Casey reveals his simple strategy for getting someone to give you money (and let me just say that it’s not by using fear tactics), and he also gives his 60-day sequence when working with subscription-based customers.

You’ll also learn the ways you can be proactive in retaining paying customers, the four main reasons people will stop paying (and they may not be what you think!) and so much more.

Like my other interviews here on the podcast, this one went in a lot of different directions and we covered a lot of things that can benefit entrepreneurs at all stages of their businesses. Whether you are just starting out on your journey or looking to scale to 7-figures, Casey is a great person to learn from because he has integrity and he’s building a business the right way.

  • The story of how I initially connected with Casey, and what he taught me about interacting with your audience through this experience
  • Why the way you acquired a customer matters so much when it comes to retaining that person
  • How the fine print in your policies will allow you retain customers while protecting yourself at the same time
  • The one question you need to ask of your CRM or payment processor
  • His “Mad Mom Princple” and what Casey means when he says that you need to “make it obvious to the oblivious”
  • The “Trouble Triangle” and “Magic Moment” principles that you can implement now to keep your customers happy and avoid potential issues ahead of time
  • Real-life examples of the “55 Cent Principle” in action, and how you can start using it in your business today for amazing results
  • What to consider when you’re transitioning to the CEO role, and the major hurdles you’ll face on the way to scaling your business to 7-figures (and beyond)

I’m honored to bring a regular listener of this podcast, Jose Quiroz, on to the show to share a cool case study of how he helped a client of his, and I know a lot of people will benefit from the lessons Jose learned from it and what he discusses in this episode.

Jose helps established businesses take their products and service online, and profit from it, and in this episode you’ll hear how he did this with his client Rich, a local fitness trainer who wanted to take his business online after previously doing in-person training and workshops.

Jose reveals how Rich went from having very little presence online to selling 25 spots in his 3-month online fitness program, all in matter of just a few weeks. Jose reveals the process, or “personalized road map” he gave Rich that made this possible, including how his client ultimately decided to deliver his course content to the participants.

Like me, Jose knew he had a bigger calling to do more than he was doing in the corporate world. He also had a lot of doubts and fears in making the transition, which he is very open about and talks about here.

I think it’s so important for people like Jose to step up and help others who want to move from the cubicle to laptop by starting their own online businesses, by giving them the coaching and guidance that they need to be successful so that they then impact more people with their own work.

  • Jose’s thought process in leaving his corporate job, and why he says a job security can be an “illusion”
  • What the transition to full-time entrepreneur looked like and how his family and childhood experiences shaped this move
  • How he learned that the only thing capping the opportunities available to him was himself
  • The “Secret Sauce” Joe now uses to guide his clients and the way he gained clarity on who he should be serving
  • How he began working with his client Rich, and why it was so important to get him over his fear of doing live video
  • A breakdown of the process he gave to Rich that resulted in 25 course sales in just a few weeks, and how they combined traditional and digital marketing to do this
  • The way they approached creating the course and delivering the content, including alternatives to doing a membership site
  • How the process will differ for someone in the corporate world looking to start an online business, and the platform Jose recommends these people leverage

Today on the show I’m bringing back my friend Craig Ballantyne to share more about how he’s crushing it using Instagram for his business. Craig appeared on the podcast back in May last year, where he talked about how he used Instagram Stories to sell over $500,000 at that time in “high ticket” workshops, but you won’t believe the further growth and success he’s seen using the platform since then!

As you’ll hear, Craig just started using Instagram in February 2017, and he says he really didn’t know what he was doing for the first month. In April 2017 he made his first $5,000 sale using Instragram, and he hasn’t stopped learning and refining his approach since that time, revealing many of his strategies he now uses in this episode.

Craig reveals the single most important thing about Instagram “swipe ups”, as well as giving a call to action that will get your prospects to take action, while allowing you to stay in integrity and fully aligned with your message.

He discusses how he qualifies the people who DM him on Instagram, what his message sequence to prospects is and how he uses video in DM to stand out from the crowd.

Craig gives us his “VPS” formula to use for successful posts, and he even breaks down some of the posts on both of our actual Instagram feeds (you can find the video of that below)!

As Craig says, the biggest thing with Instagram is being intentional about how you’re using it, and he definitely knows what he’s doing as his clients are seeing massive results using his methods – with many of them being in very unique niches.  In fact, one of his clients sold a $28,000 personal training package through Instagram, and another sold a $40,000 massage school using the platform, just to name a few examples! You could start seeing amazing results from your Instagram too, by even implementing just a few tips that Craig shares with us today.

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. How do you listen to this podcast? Is it in the iTunes app, Stitcher, Spotify or maybe iHeart Radio? Do you listen to it at regular speed, or maybe like me you listen to your podcasts at 1.5X speed? I want to know! Take a screenshot of you tuning in to The Art of Paid Traffic, and include it on your Instagram Story, while tagging me, @RickMulready!

  • How you can increase the number of responses you’re getting on your videos, and an Instagram Story strategy that doesn’t use videos

  • The role of the conversation on Instagram, in addition to just what you share with your stories
  • 7 key words to keep in mind each time you’re speaking with a potential customer on Instagram

  • Which day of the week Craig is getting a ton of views on (this may surprise you)!

  • Ways that you can keep your Instagram feed and stories fresh and unpredictable, leading to more shares by followers

  • What he has done to grow his Instagram following to almost 50,000 people, and why he won’t be trying paid shout outs again in the near future

  • Craig’s “VPS” formula, what it means to really be purposeful and why using quotes on your posts is so important to do

  • How to use IGTV to overcome changes on the platform and to get even more engagement, and his best tricks for getting the most out of this tool

With the exception of one episode about GDPR, we haven’t really covered any legal topics here on the podcast. Well, that’s about to change today, because I’m joined by Bobby Klinck, a student of mine who says he’s “not your typical lawyer!”

Bobby has a law degree from Harvard and he now considers himself an entrepreneur first. He’s been in the online space for about 5 years now, beginning by using online marketing to build his own law firm and now focusing on helping online entrepreneurs spot potential issues in their own businesses.

In this episode Bobby shares what the transition from practicing to what he’s doing now looked like, as well as some of the early struggles he had in his online business, including a failed launch where he spent $10,000 and made only one sale.

Bobby says he really started getting traction last year when he began to really listen to and understand his clients, as well putting into practice what he has learned from this podcast.

After starting by offering online courses related to legal issues, Bobby now gives training and charges for his templates. He also helps online entrepreneurs build the foundation for their business and their fan bases, so they can launch their producst successfully.

We talk about a lot here and it can be overwhelming to hear about the legal stuff that comes up in business, but the key thing Bobby says is to not it stop you, and there are steps you can take now to make protecting yourself easy.

In addition to all the great advice Bobby gives in this episode on how we can protect ourselves as online entrepreneurs, I think what makes Bobby so relatable is that he is open to sharing his own journey, and the struggles he’s faced while building his personal brand.

• The first steps an online entrepreneur should take in setting up his or her business, including the essential policies that should be in place
  • Something that is happening often on Instagram (and you may be doing yourself) that could lead to potential legal issues
  • What copyright is, and isn’t, and why attribution doesn’t cover you in all cases
  • What to consider when using case studies of your students and when making certain claims
  • All about a course agreement and the ways one can protect you
  • What Bobby recommends is well worth the investment if you’re considering a partnership with someone else (plus a personal experience and lessons from his own career)
  • An update on GDPR one year later, plus Bobby’s thoughts and solutions for it
  • The “Right To Publicity” concept, when to get written permission and why common sense should prevail in most cases

Book: 80/20 Sales and Marketing by Perry Marshall

Jul 3, 2019

My guest today is Brandi Mowles, and she helps service-based entrepreneurs and businesses explode their growth by using Facebook ads and sales funnels. I originally recorded a strategy session with Brandi earlier this year that hadn’t yet aired, but after talking with Brandi at ConvertKit’s Craft + Commerce conference this month, I just knew I had to bring her back on to share what’s been happening in her business.

In addition to being one of my students and a coach for my Impact group coaching program, Brandi has just launched her 12-month membership program for service-based entrepreneurs who want to scale to consistent 5-figure months, without hiring a team. You’re going to love her story of how she launched this program and the results she got from the beta launch to a relatively small list of a few hundred people. Brandi is a perfect example that you don’t need everything to be perfect, because she generated $4,000 on this launch before even going public with it!

In this episode you’ll hear how Brandi first found this podcast and dove into managing Facebook ads for others, originally getting clients from Facebook groups but maxing out her revenue at about $6,000 a month. She talks about her experiences with local clients from LinkedIn, and why she made the switch back to working exclusively with online service-based entrepreneurs, with great success.

Brandi shares the amazing results her clients have seen, starting with an early client from James Wedmore’s Business By Design group whose launch generated about $21,000 in revenue on an ad spend of just $823. Brandi’s now helping that client launch a second time, and through word of mouth referrals, Brandi’s business has absolutely exploded.

There is so much in this episode that you can learn from Brandi’s work with her clients, some of them in very niche industries, as well as how she’s successfully building her own business. In fact, Brandi is also a new member of my Accelerator mastermind starting this month, so I’ll be excited to see even more progress she makes over the second half of 2019, and I’d love to bring her back on again to share it all with you.

Why do so many entrepreneurs struggle with building a team? This is a topic that we haven’t talked a lot about on previous episodes of the podcast, but I’m going to be diving deep into it with my guest Theresa Loe today.

Theresa helps online entrepreneurs find, grow and then lead their own stellar teams. She helps her clients streamline the backend of their businesses so that they actually have the time to work on the vision of the company, which is at the core of the problem for most business owners looking to grow their businesses.

As you’ll hear, a lot of this comes back to us having to get past our fears around scaling and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. The best part of all of this is that you don’t have to hire 10 full-time employees out the gate to help you, and you can absolutely do it in baby steps. You do have to get started with getting the support in you business though, because you really can’t do everything yourself.

Although we covered so much in this conversation, there is still so much more I wanted to ask Theresa about scaling the right way, which is why I tell her she’ll have to come back on the show to share her advice and wisdom.

Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. How do you listen to this podcast? Is it in the iTunes app, Stitcher, Spotify or maybe iHeart Radio? On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

  • What Theresa’s own pivot in business has looked like and how her team has helped her through this transition

  • Both of our personal experiences with perfectionism and the fear of letting go

  • The difference between assigning tasks and assigning responsibility, and why understanding this concept is crucial

  • What to do if you have no idea where to start with hiring your first employee or contractor

  • Theresa’s tips and strategies for the interview process, including why she prefers video interview over phone
interviews and why behavioral-based questions are so powerful
  • How you can hire on a trail basis and assign test projects to people you’re considering bringing onboard

  • Whether or not experience in and knowledge of the online space should be required in candidates

  • A mistake I made early on around our systems and processes – and what you can do to avoid making it too

  • What the role of an “integrator” looks like and when is the right time to hire one in your business

  • The reasons you should always be communicating your business values with your team

Joining me today on the podcast is a return guest, Sarah Young. Sarah is the founder of BizTemplateBabe.com, where she creates DIY graphic design templates for online entrepreneurs, and she is actually a new member of my Accelerator mastermind group, starting this July.

I asked Sarah to come back on the show because her business has really evolved over the past 14 months since she was last here. She’s now doing multiple 5-figures a month in her business, while only spending a couple of thousand dollars on Facebook and Instagram ads each month.

As you’ll hear, it’s really just Sarah working in the business at this point in time, and she’s handling everything from the ads management to customer service. This has been a challenge and she talks about her plans to get support, as well more systems in place, to scale her business going forward.

In this episode Sarah dives into how she’s built her business, from first launching on Etsy to validate the business to the mistakes she made getting while it off the ground.

We also look at the tactical stuff, like why it took her 6 months to build out her sales funnel, how she’s set her ad campaigns up and the way she’s optimized her paid ads.

Sarah also reveals how she’s getting an amazing 60% conversion rate of sales from cold traffic, what’s held her back from scaling her current ad spend, and a whole lot more.

We really break down Sarah’s business today, including what’s working really well for her and what she can tweak and improve on to scale things in the near future, so I think wherever you are in your business you can get valuable insight from what she has to say today.

On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

  • How Sarah learned that offering too many options to your customers isn’t a good thing

  • Her ad strategy for targeting cold traffic and the way that she uses upsells to generate more revenue

  • What her nurture sequence looks like and a complete breakdown of her current sales funnel

  • The way she does beta testing of new products with previous customers who have purchased from her

  • How Sarah is using 30-second video ads to get more sales

  • The average daily budget for her ads and the objective she’s using with her Facebook advertising

  • Exciting partnerships Sarah has in the works and her plans that will allow her to spend more time with her husband and young son

  • Something I feel she needs to let go of in order to get to the next level in business (hint: it’s something I’ve struggled with myself as a business owner!)

On last Wednesday’s episode I shared 7 key lessons that I’ve learned on my way to 7-figures, and as you heard, it took a lot more than just using Facebook and Instagram ad stories.

When I was brainstorming ideas for that episode though I came up with four more “bonus” lessons, and I thought it would be a bit too much to cover them all at one time, which is why I’m sharing them with you today.

The best part is that these lessons too are applicable to getting your business to 6-figures as well as 7-figures, if you’re at the point in your business where you’re trying to do that.

On the Show Today You’ll Learn:

  • The 7 key lessons from last week’s episode
  • How I learned that less really is more for your online business
  • Why you should validate, then create, your online course and how I successfully launched my very first course using this method
  • That building your “dream team” does not have to be a daunting task
  • Why it’s not just ok to reinvent yourself, and sometimes it’s essential to do this

Later this week I’ll be bringing you another Quick Tip episode, where I’m going to be clearing up the confusion around the conversion window, so you won’t want to miss that one.

When I start talking about the different elements it takes to build a successful online business, other than using Facebook and Instagram ad strategies, I often get puzzled looks. I may be known for teaching how to successfully use ads to grow an online business and impact more people, but it took way more than just this for me to grow a thriving 7-figure business in less than 4 years.

On today’s episode I’ll be going into what it took, including things like building a team, positioning myself as an expert, creating and launching courses, memberships and in-person events, and a whole lot more. I’ll be looking at the mindset shifts I had to master, and essentially what it’s taken for me to become the actual CEO of my business.

To create sustainable growth, it takes a more holistic strategy than most experts are using today. Yes, ads are important, but they’re really just one piece of the puzzle needed to get to that next level.

So today I’m going to be sharing 7 key lessons that I’ve learned on the way to 7-figures, and regardless of where you are in your own business, I know that these lessons are going to be super helpful for you.
